Have you not led this life quite long?
Harry Clarke
Faust, 1925:
I was about to blithely reblog this, and then I saw the “poe” tag. I said to myself “What does Poe have to do with Clarke or Goethe?” and then I saw this error!
Clarke did illustrations for Poe, but AFAICT, Poe never even did any illustrations.
So this is a drawing, by Harry Clarke, illustrating a play by Goethe, and Poe has nothing to do with it :)
I’ll spare you all my grumblings about how this is the second artist kindasorta being screwed out of credit by people’s rampant love of Poe [the first I saw being that M.C. Escher self-portrait some arse decided to slap Poe’s face over. urgh.]
Okay I lied but just go look at Clarke’s pretty stuff; I need to get a proper book with plates of his drawings… /art nerdin’

A reminder to everyone that red noses and joints have been an artistic decision for a very long time, in order to exaggerate the health and flesh of a human being.
tbh i sort of forget about the ~*deviantart core*~ arist population here on tumblr, and am normally a little shocked when it rears it’s head. who cares if someone likes noses or joints tinged red? who cares? yes, i agree it’s very annoying to see an artist who is using stylistc short hand as a scapegoat as to why they won’t change anything in their work, ie, ”oh, no, the legs are supposed to be like that/her hair always looks like it’s in the wind, but that’s my style.” but that is not what we are talking about here.
what? no way, dude. you think davinci decided to draw eyes one way forever because IT WAS HIS STYLE?! art, and drawing in particular, is a life-long journey. your drawings are going to grow and develop with you, just compare your sketchbook today to what you drew in primary school. who cares if someone wants to paint very blushy figures? if you don’t like it, don’t incorporate it into your art.
i’m just sick of the internet treating art as “ANIME” and “NON ANIME”. it doesn’t work that way guys. this is the FIRST MAJOR HINT you are kind of a total amateur artist. the last time i had someone tell me “to stop making anime art because it wasn’t real” was an awful art teacher in 7th grade.
and seriously? if you are noticing “art trends” on tumblr, GET OFF OF TUMBLR. UGH!! i can’t stress this enough! go look at art books, art museums, magazines, comics, the real world, movies, i swear to god just get off the interent. go find inspiration from something else. study some history and then notice the art trends. i promise you there is a great, big, massive world of art outside of tumblr. go stick ur nose in a book, get over this idea of NON ANIME ART vs ANIME ART. it’s not real, there are as many different types of art as there are types of people in this world.

OMG ^^THIS^^
everything you learned on deviantart is a lie, real artists trace, rip eachother off, exagerate everything, spend years making a 20x20’ canvas the right blue, etccccc
art is so much more than recreating what a photograph can do [and by proxy, photograpy is an art so much more than just capturing reality as it is] and making universally pleasing full-body pin-ups in exacting detail.
